about
'Sleeping ZZZZs' was recorded during the pandemic lockdown at home. During the session, I was teaching myself how to record, and this song was a precursor to some of the music I have already recorded and released i.e. Graphic Touch, Right Angles, White Ash, Emergency, and Steal.
To create the track, I used a Casiotone 405 (bought from an op shop) and a piano which has been in my family for over 60 years, in fact, it belonged to my maternal grandmother. I remember it always being around. As a result, the piano sound resonates powerfully with my identity and underpins childhood perceptions and memory.
The main vocal was recorded in one take, with multiple backing vocals/harmonies and synth added after. The track was meant to only exist as a demo to re-record later, but I ended up satisfied with the song's unusual and simple, spacey sound.
I haven't released the track until now because I really didn't understand what my subconscious was trying to tell me, and it is one of those songs where you can simply get lost trying to make sense of its layers.
lyrics
Sleeping ZZZZs
I wanted to be
Myself around you
But I could not understand myself
No more than any moment I was dealt
Did not understand myself
No more than any problem
So I stayed low
Doing nothing
For I knew I
Would not be everything
To anyone who believed in me
Sure, I could not understand myself
No more than any moment I had felt
I did not understand myself
No more than any problem
I was dealt
Sleeping ZZZZ’s
Filing off them pages
Fall asleep into some dream like status
Every word reveals untruth
I’d be lying if I said I was immune
See the paper lifting off the table
Now the wind’s generating labels
Every word reveals some untruth
I’d be lying
I was dealt
Sleeping ZZZZ’s
Filing off them pages
Fall asleep into some dream like status
Every word reveals untruth
I’d be lying if I said I was immune
See the paper lifting off the table
Now the wind’s delegating labels
Every word reveals some untruth
I’d be lying if I said it didn’t resonate
Now I think
I’m lonely
But a gift in sight
Has set me free
I wish that I could take attacks
Put away each dish I’ve cleaned or cracked
Walk back through a door held open
I’d care to leave the past unbroken
Sleeping ZZZZ’s file off them pages
We fall into the dreamlike status
Words reveal their complications
I’m lying if I said I was immune
